A minimum of 25 percent of the net income from each domestic Affiliate Race supports the national Komen for the Cure Grant Program, which funds groundbreaking breast cancer research, meritorious awards and educational and scientific conferences around the world.
Up to 75 percent of the net income from each domestic Affiliate Race stays in the local community to fund breast health education, breast cancer screening and treatment projects.
Brief Summary of Funding Priorities - Action Plan
Priority One: Increase breast health awareness and understanding of the importance of screening in the West Michigan Affiliate service area with emphasis on Montcalm, Muskegon and Newaygo Counties, targeting: African American, rural, and Hispanic populations. By 2013, develop two strategic community partnerships with agencies that serve the target populations in the three counties to further the awareness and education messages of breast health and breast care.
Priority Two: Through strategic outreach activities increase the number of potential grantees by 2013 for delivery of screening services in the Affiliate service area, most particularly in Montcalm, Muskegon and Newaygo Counties. The goal is to engage at least two new grantees who further access and increase the number screened. Screening services can include annual care as well as high risk and genetic testing.
Priority Three: Increase access to breast cancer treatment services among men and women in need of treatment with a focus on Montcalm, Muskegon and Newaygo. Strive to improve and increase access to treatment in Montcalm, Muskegon, and Newaygo Counties by encouraging those agencies with transportation initiatives and co-pay assistance to participate in the annual community grants process.
